Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed the way English language learning is conducted in higher education. Various AI-based applications, such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, Gemini, QuillBot, and DeepL, are increasingly being used to help students develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Although these tools offer numerous benefits, the use of AI also presents challenges, such as reliance on technology, breaches of academic integrity, and a decline in critical thinking skills. This article aims to examine the opportunities, challenges, and future directions for integrating AI into English language learning at the university level. The study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The literature was sourced from the Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 2021 to 2025. The findings indicate that AI contributes to increased student engagement, faster feedback, more personalized learning, and greater student autonomy. On the other hand, the implementation of AI requires strengthening digital literacy, academic ethics, and faculty readiness so that technology is used to support the learning process, rather than as a substitute for students’ critical thinking skills. Therefore, the integration of AI must be accompanied by learning strategies and institutional policies that can optimize the benefits of AI while minimizing the risks it poses.
