Abstract

This study examines an often-overlooked cultural issue within the Toba Batak community: the gradual transformation of marsiadapari, a traditional system of mutual cooperation, in response to modern socio-economic pressures. This research employs a qualitative approach through ethnographic observation and semi-structured interviews with members of Toba Batak communities in both rural and semi-urban areas. The findings indicate a significant shift from reciprocal, obligation-based cooperation toward transactional labor arrangements characterized by monetary exchange. This transition reflects broader influences of urban migration, economic rationalization, and changing generational values. Younger community members increasingly perceive marsiadapari as impractical, contributing to its gradual decline. As a result, the weakening of this practice has implications for social solidarity, interdependence, and the transmission of cultural values. Furthermore, the study highlights a subtle tension between cultural preservation and adaptation, where communities negotiate the relevance of tradition in contemporary life. Despite its importance, this issue remains largely absent from mainstream cultural discourse, which tends to prioritize more visible ceremonial aspects of Batak identity. By focusing on this underrepresented dimension, the study underscores the need to reconsider how cultural sustainability is understood, particularly in relation to everyday practices that quietly shape collective identity.
