Abstract

Until now, the view of Orientalism for some Muslims is still considered negative, although for others it is not. Therefore, it is necessary to look at Orientalism again in its entirety from a historical perspective so as not to misunderstand it. This article describes three phases of the development of Orientalism in history. First, the period before the outbreak of the crusades, and Islam was in its golden age. Second, the period of the Crusades until the enlightenment or Renaissance. Third, the Renaissance period until now. The Renaissance was a point of change for the study of Orientalism, which was initially based on hostility, to become more academic and objective. Because the spirit of the Renaissance is the spirit of scientists who really emphasize freedom of thought and objectivity. Therefore, the negative view towards Orientalists cannot be separated from past history, where before the Renaissance occurred, Orientalists carried out studies in order to bring down Muslims themselves..
