Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in teaching science, specifically the topic of photosynthesis, to fourth-grade students at SDN Kolor II. The research was motivated by the fact that students often have a low understanding of photosynthesis, which is abstract and prone to misconceptions. Therefore, an instructional model that facilitates direct learning experiences and encourages critical thinking skills is needed. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers, and supporting documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the implementation of PBL encouraged students to actively observe, investigate, and solve problems related to plant phenomena and the photosynthesis process. Students were able to connect their observations with scientific concepts, leading to deeper understanding. Group discussions and collaborative report writing also helped improve students’ communication and teamwork skills. Nevertheless, some challenges were noted, such as limited instructional time and the need for more intensive guidance for certain students. Overall, the study concludes that PBL is effective in teaching science, particularly the topic of photosynthesis, and can serve as an alternative instructional strategy to enhance active engagement and conceptual understanding among elementary school students.
