Abstract

This study aims to improve the mathematics learning outcomes of fourth-grade students on the topic of plane figures through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model at UPT SD Negeri 060891 Jamin Ginting, Medan City, North Sumatra, Academic Year 2024/2025. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through learning outcome tests, observations of teacher and student activities, and documentation. The results showed an increase in the average student learning outcomes from the pre-cycle score of 63.8 to 69.0 in Cycle I, and further to 78.46 in Cycle II. The percentage of student mastery also improved from 60% in the pre-cycle to 67% in Cycle I and reached 87% in Cycle II. Moreover, students’ learning activities significantly improved, as seen in their increased participation in group discussions, activeness in asking questions, and ability to solve problems independently and collaboratively. Students' responses to the PBL model were very positive, as it provided a more engaging, interactive, and meaningful learning experience. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of the Problem-Based Learning model is effective in enhancing students' mathematics learning outcomes and fostering their active involvement in the learning process. This model is recommended for use in elementary mathematics education as a means to improve both the quality of instruction and student achievement.
