Abstract

This article provides an in-depth discussion of the role of transpersonal awareness in formulating diagnoses of emotional and behavioral disorders through a comprehensive academic approach. In modern clinical practice, the psychological diagnostic process still often relies on conventional models such as biological, behavioral, or psychodynamic approaches, which tend to be reductionistic and focused on surface-level symptoms. Although these models have made important contributions, they often remain unable to accommodate the complexity of human experience that involves spiritual, existential, and transcendental dimensions. The transpersonal psychology approach offers a broader perspective by incorporating aspects of peak consciousness, mystical experiences, and the dynamics of spiritual development that also shape an individual’s emotional and behavioral conditions. Through an extensive literature review, this article demonstrates that transpersonal awareness plays a role in differentiating healthy spiritual experiences from psychopathological symptoms, understanding the tension between the ego and the Self, and evaluating spiritual trauma that significantly affects emotional regulation. Integrating this transpersonal dimension provides a strong conceptual foundation for developing diagnoses that are not only clinically accurate but also more holistic, humane, and aligned with the context of an individual’s developmental level of consciousness. Thus, the transpersonal approach not only enriches the theoretical understanding of mental health but also enhances the quality of case formulation in contemporary clinical practice.
