PENGUATAN PERAN MASYARAKAT DESA BULANGO RAYA DALAM PELESTARIAN MANGROVE BERBASIS PARTISIPATIF

Abstract

This community service activity was conducted in Bulango Raya Village, Tomilito Sub-district, with the aim of strengthening the role of coastal communities in participatory-based mangrove conservation. The activity was carried out over three days, covering the preparation stage through to the implementation of mangrove planting. The methods applied included a participatory approach through socialization, direct interviews with community members, group discussions, and assistance in mangrove rehabilitation activities. The interview data collection process was supported by the Epicollect application to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data recording. A total of 20 respondents participated in this activity, consisting of fishermen, civil servants, housewives, and youth. The survey results indicate that the majority of the community has long resided around the mangrove area and holds positive perceptions of the existence of mangrove forests. However, community understanding of mangrove benefits remains limited to their function as sources of fisheries products such as crabs, shellfish, and fish. The dominant mangrove species at the activity site was Rhizophora spp., along with other species including Sonneratia spp., Avicennia spp., Acanthus ilicifolius, Xylocarpus granatum, and Nypa fruticans. This community service activity successfully increased public awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving mangroves, while also broadening perspectives on the economic potential of mangroves through the utilization of non-timber forest products, such as mangrove fruit processing and the development of ecotourism. This activity is expected to serve as an initial step toward promoting sustainable mangrove management to support ecological balance and the well- being of coastal communities in Bulango Raya Village.
